Question Thursday/Friday

dried sunflower

Every now and then I participate in Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer (nothing that requires a lengthy response) and Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).

Last week for Aloha Friday Pinay in the States asked readers if the weather was "normal...or something else?" in their area.  Not ONE person answered normal!   Abnormal has been the norm this past week:   while New England got pummelled by Irene, here in Texas we only got a few raindrops of relief  from the long, horrid, heat wave we've been in.

In the midst of this I published my monthly planting tips...something I write a long time in advance.  After reading a comment from my reader I realized how ridiculous the idea of planting ANYTHING sounds right now in this heat.   I went back and amended it...adding some heat appropriate suggestions.

Though I'm still going to attempt planting a few things this september,  I'll be using trick I've tried before and put some fake flowers around them to add shade...or maybe I'll take FlipFlopGardener suggestion and use umbrellas!  Making a mesh "tent' might work too.  That, and pray for rain!

  • So, what gardening challenges are you facing right now, and what tricks are you trying to keep your garden alive?

2 Question Thursday/Aloha Friday

Every now and then I participate in Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer (nothing that requires a lengthy response) and Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).

We recently got back from a Vacation with my family in California.  With three boys under 10, a 4 hour flight, and long trips in a rental car, I was very thankful to have a few things with us.  The most useful (other than diapers...diapers are definately useful) were these:

Our iPhone: Direction on google maps, Yelp for finding good restaurants and hotels, and lots of games to keep the kids occupied.  Oh, and if you are visiting San Diego might I recommend the free San Diego Hotels map and the Balboa Park ap you you plan to visit there.

Crayola Color Wonder Disney Cars Coloring Book and MarkersColor Wonder Books:  I bought one book for each of my three boys and they were worth every penny.  They kept them busy for hours on the plane and at my Dad's nursing home, and I didn't have to worry about them coloring the seats.

So anyways, here's my questions today...

  • Where have you travelled this summer?
  • What are the things you found most useful while traveling?

If you have a blog and would like to post your own questions you can leave your link on the appropriate day at the linkys at 2 Questions Thursday and An Island Life.

Traveling Questions

Every now and then I participate in Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer (nothing that requires a lengthy response) and Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).

I am just back from a Vacation with my family in California.  In spite of loosing my wallet and nearly missing my flight because of it, nearly loosing a suitcase (it took a different rout home than we did), leaving my camera at a relative's, and getting a slightly sprained ankle, it was a good trip.  Actually, a very good trip!  I'll be posting some pictures here once I get the pics on my phone downloaded, and more once I get my camera back.

So anyways, here's my questions today...

  • Have you ever lost anything on a trip?
  • Have you ever gotten injured while on a trip?

If you have a blog and would like to post your own questions you can leave your link on the appropriate day at the linkys at 2 Questions Thursday and An Island Life.

Aloha Friday - Summer

Hello!  I'm participating in Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer and Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).

The entire summer here in Texas has been in the triple digits (just about).  If I were in charge of schools, summer for schools in Texas would be from the 2nd week of April through the first week of July (to include independence day). That would give us more time to enjoy the cool months, and still have a little summer overlap with other states.

So here's my questions...

  1. How's the weather been this summer where you are?
  2. If you could choose when summer vacation would be (any time...wouldn't even have to be 3 months in a row...could be a month here and there), would you change the dates of summer?

You can post your answers in a comment below.  :-)

2 Question Thursday/Aloha Friday

Every now and then I participate in Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer (nothing that requires a lengthy response) and Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).  If you'ld like to, comment with an answer to the questions below:

1.  Do you get seasonal allergies?

2.  If so, what is the most drastic thing you would do to get rid of them?

Please leave your answers in a comment.  Thanks a bunch!

As for my answer...I do get allergies, but fairly mild.   My husband, however, gets them horribly.   I've actually heard about people going so far as to infect themselves with hook-worms, which may suppress allergic reactions.   Neither of us would go that far.

Clovers: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday and Two Question Thursday

Happy St. Patricks Day!

It seemed a timely day to talk about clover. The clover is a symbol of Ireland, and of St. Patrick Day specifically as it is said that St. Patrick used it to explain the trinity to the Irish people.    Legend says that he would explain that just as the clover has three separate leaves and yet is one leaf, so the three persons of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) are separate yet one.

In my yard here in Texas there are two kinds of clover...one which I like, and one which I'm not as fond of.

I don't have any of this kind of clover (White Clover), though it does grow in Texas...

Clover

...though I would love to have some, as you can make tea out of the blossoms and use the roots in soups.  However, probably the ones in Texas aren't the best for that, as clover grown in warm climate can contain cyanide (small amounts...but still).   Granted, it's a small amount, and probably no more dangerous than what you'ld find in almonds, spinach or soy  (surprize surprize...we can eat small amounts).  I've heard of many naturalists, including ones in the south, eating them with no harmful results.    Some people are allergic to clover too, so if you try some, even the safe clover from up north, try a small amount first.  Also, clovers should be eaten fresh or dried, never fermented.

Now, here's another clover clover that does bless my yard....

Yellow Wood Sorrel

This is actually, technically, a type of Wood Sorrel, not clover.  I've seen this plant in Texas with flowers in yellow, white, and light pink.  Yellow Wood-Sorrel (Oxalis Dillenii) The seed pods are edible in small quantities, but toxic in large amounts.  So, throwing a few in your salad is great (they are high in vitimin C) but don't eat them by the cup-full, and avoid them altogether if you have gout, rheumatism and kidney stones.

You can see a close up of the pods, to the right.

The "clover" below however, is not so nice (but not as bad as I used to think it was).

It's called Burr Clover for it's circular, spiky looking burs.  I USED to think that it was the culprit for these hard, painful spiky things that keep me from walking in my yard barefoot....but those are actually SANDBRS (also known as Goats Heads).   Sandburs are horrible because they are barbed in a way that makes them very painful to remove. You actually have to yank them out (which is hard to do without embedding them in your fingers)--you can't just pull them out gently because they're barbed like little hooks. I had assumed that "clover" burrs  hardened into those because I always seemed to pick up those burs when stepping through an area of my yard that was covered with them.  Turns out it was sandburs growing in the same area.  (sand burs just look like grass until they seed...horrid stuff).  Bur clover does catch in pet fur and clothing, but is more of a nuisance than a pain.

You can't just mow low to get rid of sand burs or bur clover  because bur clover creeps low to the ground and sand bur will just go to seed spikes lower down...and plus there's a good chance if you do mow over the taller one's you'll be planting them for next year.  . The best way to rid either of these from your yard is to pull them by hand.  For burr clover you can do this before they grow burrs, but unfortunately sand bur is hard to distinguish from other grasses so you may have to get them WHILE they have the spikes, which is a little tricky to do without getting hurt. I usually wear thick gloves, and once I've found the bur follow the stem to pull out from the the base (below the burrs).   Sometimes I just just clip the burrs off at the top and throw them into a bag, then use a long weeder to remove the base once they've been de-burred  (this is much easier to do if you let the dang things grown long, and don't mow them short).   After seeing a bunch of these you might start to recognize the shape and slight purple tinge on the base of this gastly grass, and so be able to uproot some of them before they produce burrs.

Sand burrs are a horrible plant and I really don't care if it does have any beneficial uses.

There's is a song I found called "Burr Clover Farm Blues", but it's about missing some farm with that name. I wrote a Burr Clover blues version back when I thought they were the culprit, not the sand burrs.  Here it is with "sand burr" now replacing "Bur Clover."

I got the Sand Burr Blues,
Makes me gotta wear shoes,
I try to get rid of it but
it grows tried and true.
I got the sand burr,
sand burr, sand burr blues.

Now for my questions...

  • What is the worst weed to curse your yard?
  • Do you have any weeds that you like?  That bless your yard?

Thanks!  If you have a blog and would like to post your own questions you can leave your link on the appropriate day at the linkys at 2 Questions Thursday and Aloha Friday.

Two Questions Thursday - Aloha Friday

My kids had fun carving the jack-o-lantern above.  It came out pretty scary looking.  But even scarier than that is what happens after halloween...EVERY year.

Well, at least to us.  Everyone else in the world might not get sick the week after halloween, but I can't remember a Halloween we haven't gotten sick.  Even on my second son's first halloween, three days after he was born, his older brother got chicken pox!  This year one child is coughing, and the other seems fine except that he threw up last night....and that wasn't from eating too much Halloween Candy, cause I've only let them eat a few every day.

So, here's my questions for Aloha Friday and 2 Question Thursday:
  1. Do your kids often get sick after Halloween.
  2. Anyone know a great way to clean up vomit?  I have my methods, but if someone has a good way of "sterilizing" the area, I'd like to know.

Grackle Season

The first place I heard of "grackle season" was The Yankee Chick's Guide to Texas.  In it there is a hilarious section where the author, Sophia Dembling,  describes the "other" seasons of Texas, inlcuding Grackle Season.  Now, when I first read this I had never heard the word "Grackle" before, but when she descibed the countless hourds of black birds that descend on shopping malls across Texas, I knew exactly what she was talking about.

That makes this all the more funny....

Yeah, every time I talk about grackles I have to share that cause it still cracks me up.  I found that button several years ago on CafePress and loved it so much I bought 10 (OK, they didn't sell them individually...just in packs of 10...and I figured I'd find someone to give these to!). Seeing how the grackle population seems to be strong enough to take over a small Texas city, I'm assuming that's meant to be a joke--but you never know! Either way it's hilarious.

So, this all leads in to my questions for today.  I gather Texas isn't the only state with a "Grackle Season", so...
  1. Are the grackles hoarding in your area?  If not, when do they usually pass through (if they do).
  2. Where do you live? (What State, or country/territory if you're outside the US).
Please leave your answer in the comments.  Thanks
