So, I heard Texas got snow...

So...this happened...

That picture (and the humor) was from a friend of mine in Houston...not from me, cause as you know if you read my last post, I'm not in Texas anymore.

And NOW it decides to snow.

You remember around 2008 - 2011 or so Texas got some pretty good snow? (And, for any northerners dropping by,  by "pretty good"  I mean enough snow to scrape a snowman off your yard if you try really, really hard).

Well, you may not but my kids sure do...and EVERY SINGLE YEAR SINCE any time the temperature would drop, they would look to the sky for white stuff, and get mad when none would come.

So now I'm in a place with mountains in short driving distance...but even the mountains aren't getting snow (least not any that sticks long enough for us to get there.)  Meanwhile, TEXAS is having tons of it (and by tons, I mean...ah, well, um....SOME).   It's like the state is blowing snowy zerberts at us!

Seriously, though I can't complain...it's like 75 degrees here.

Enjoy the snow ya'll!

THIS IS TEXAS: 2 Skies - 2 Colors - All Within 15 Mintues

These skies both happened last Thursday, not long after a tornado warning had been lifted.  Thankfully it was calm the rest of the night with no further weather.  To be sure we were watching the sky that day!   This is Texas!

Definition of the Word "Depressing"

My cousin's flip flops (he let me steal this picture).  He's in Virginia, not Texas, but this is pretty much my town today too.  Well, we we got a snow day out of it...so who cares if the snow's all melted now.  ;-)

Freezing Rain...

...can be beautiful.

These were all crops from one large picture of frosted dead weeds.
"Frosted dead weeds" doesn't sound very pretty, but I could explore this one
photo for hours.  It makes me want to be an ant-sized and invincible
so I could climb around in that icy wonderland and explore.

California's Got Snow

Juniper Flats area under snow
NPS Photo by Brad Sutton

While we're still waiting for the white stuff here in Central Texas, my friends in California are covered in it!    (And I don't just mean on the mountains...there is snow DOWN THE HILL!).  Well, I guess it's California's turn.  Enjoy it while you can Californians! Stay safe, dress warn, drive slow, etc. etc.!

Weather Wimps

Ok, I can't exactly call Texans weather wimps.  They go through days and days of 100+ degree heat in the summer, and sure, they complain about it...but they still get up early to mow their lawns when it's ONLY 90 degrees.  So, when the weather gets down to the 40's here, I can't blame them (and myself) for hiding out inside.  A).  We got acclimated to 100+ degree whether over the summer, so it takes our bodies longer to adjust to this.  B).  We know it's gonna be in the 70's or 80's any day now, so why not just wait for that?   C).  Cold weather really is colder here...I'm not kidding.  I grew up in the mountains and got snow all the time and temps down in the teens or lower were not uncommon.  But when I moved up here and had to walk across campus in 40 degree whether, cold, and rain, it FELT as cold as the coldest day we experienced "up the hill" in California.  Wind chill + humidity = COLD!

However, California flat landers...yeah, they are legitimately weather wimps.  I remember one day traveling down the hill to meet with some friends of friends there.  We were basking in the relative "warmth" while they were complaining about how freezing it was.  Guess things haven't changed.  This clip from Jimmy Kimmel is hilarious!

Snow in Texas? What To Do In An Unexpected Snowstorm!

It's a beautiful warm sunny day here this afternoon, but I gather somewhere in Texas it snowed today.  I learned this reading a funny post on Insanity Rules about how you can know it's colder than usual here.    One thing she mentioned was having to go out and buy gloves, which reminded me of some past snows we've experienced in Texas which we were utterly unprepared for.  And so I bring you...

TIPS FOR DRESSING FOR UNEXPECTED SNOW

And yes, save the last part, this is pretty much exactly how my kids were dressed in several snowstorms in Texas.   The last one was just me, when I forgot a boot on a trip to the mountains.

TemStock - Santa's Hat

If you can't find any warm hats, try rummaging through your Christmas decorations.  A Santa hat will do in a pinch.  No Santa hats?  You can also wrap a scarf around your head for warmth if you have one.  And even a baseball cap is better than nothing.

If you can't find gloves, several layers of socks work like mittens (although, like mittens, they become freezing and soggy wet after being used to make a few snowballs).

Dish gloves, though not as warm, keep out the wet.  If you are willing to sacrifice a sock, you can cut off the end of the sock to make it fingerless, and layer it under a dish glove to keep the cold off your palm at least.   If you have thin knit gloves they may be able to fit under large dish gloves.

No snow boots?   No problem.   While regular tennis-shoes get soaked pretty quick in even mildly deep snow, there's a solution.  PLASTIC WRAP!   Before going out in the snow wrap plastic wrap over your socks sort of like you would wrap a cast to protect it when taking a bath, then put on your shoes over it.  It really works...I have TESTED this one in snow deeper than we're ever likely to get in central Texas.

In this picture (left), I am actually wearing ONE snow boot and ONE thin canvas shoe with plastic wrap in it (cause I left a boot at home when we left for the mountains...doh).  But because of plastic wrap both feet were equally warm and cozy the whole time.

(Slipperyness is a whole 'nother issue....and I don't have a good solution for that one, save for scattering kitty litter on your walk).

HOW TO DE-ICE YOUR CAR

Texifornian blogger A Dash of Sarah wrote another great post about the snow too...in which she mentioned her momentary panic at seeing her car covered in it. Having grown up in the California mountains, I know a thing or two about getting ice off a car...I was helping my mom de-ice the car before I could even drive. So, for those who've never had to do that...here's some tips:

  1. If the snow is nice and powdery its easy to brush off.  If it's wet those dish gloves may come in handy.  You only will have a problem if it's snow that's gotten wet and then frozen.  Then the tips below will help.

  2. If your car is covered in ice, it pays to sit in your car for a while with the engine running to warm it up--your car will drive better and it may make de-icing your car easier.  Or you can leave your car running while you set at trying to tackle the ice.

  3. If you don't have a car scraper, you can use a credit card to scrape frost off your window and rear-view mirrors.  A plastic spatula works too.   If it's a thick layer you may need to do some hacking (A credit card won't help too much here.  The edge of a plastic scraper is ideal--the edge of a hairbrush can sometimes work too.  Sometimes all it takes is a firm pound of your fist to break it up.  But if you're getting nowhere with these, refer to step 2.).

  4. DO NOT just clear off the window and drive with a big slab of ice on top of your roof...because at some point your car is going to warm up and it will start to melt and that big ole slab will either go crashing into the car behind you, or come crashing down your windshield when you stop, blocking your view.
Of course, taking that car out on the road is another matter.  For best practices for driving in snow, this page by Car and Drive will help.  Of course, if possible just stay home.   Enjoy the snow while it lasts.  Stay safe out there!

(Thanks to Tamari 09 on Flickr for the use of the Santa hat.  I couldn't find the picture of my kiddo decked in a Santa hat in the snow so was very grateful for the substitute.  )

Bluebonnets and Tornadoes - This is Texas

I had my Wherever Wednessday post all planned out this week. I usually talk about quirky Texas stuff and a lot of it is the stuff I DON'T like about Texas. This week I was gonna brag on one of my favorite things about Texas, namely this...

The gorgeous color-fest which is Texas spring!

But Texas spring also brought something else yesterday,
namely this....

Texas Tornadoes!  NOT one of my fave Texas things.

But they are amazing.  Though I am horrified at the damage they cause, these storms leave me awe-struck too.  I have to admit I watched that video several times gobsmacked that wind, just wind, can pick up a semi like that.  I was thankful to learn no one was in it.

The tornadoes that came through Texas yesterday missed us  (we did get some golf-ball sized hail though), and no one we know was hurt, thankfully...though my sister-in-law's car got hail damage  (she didn't say how badly...just said "We're ok...our car, not so much.")

Anyways, hope you all are doing ok out there.   If you weren't affected yourself and want to help out those that were hit, Charity Navigator has started up a list of places to donate and you can find a list of places to voluteer, bring canned goods, etc. here.  And, please,  if you know of any other food or clothing drives or anything like that in your area, let me know and I'll share it here.

Oh, and if you like poetry, you might want to check out the poem posted yesterday at Red or Gray.

 Stay safe ya'll.

Texas Gardening Tips: January Veggies, Herbs and Spring Frost Dates

January is a flighty month as far was weather is concerned...warm one day, freezing  the next.  On the nicer days you can enjoy getting back into your garden!  I know I have.  Its a great time to weed (and I'll get into that later this month if I have time.  It's also a great time for growing cool season vegetables!.  Here's some veggies you can plant this month.

Plant in Zone 7
Onions
English and Sweet Peas

Plant in Zones 8 and 9
PLANT FROM SEEDS
Beets
Broccoli
Cabbage
Carrots
Cauliflower
Chinese cabbage
Collards
Kale
Kohlrabi
Lettuce
Mustard
Peas (English and Snow)
Radish
Rutabaga
Spinach
Swiss chard
Turnips

USE SETS, TRANSPANTS or TUBERS
Celery
Leeks
Onions
Potatoes, Irish (Tuber Pieces)*
Shallots

*Irish potatoes are planted potato pieces, cut egg-sized, each containing at least one eye.

PLANT IN GREENHOUSES or HOTBEDS
Eggplant
Peppers
Tomatoes

Now, as for herbs, my go to gardening book says "Although herbs have their seasons, planting times are not as critical as they are for vegetables" which explains why their herb planting chart is more vague than for vegetables.  One thing it does say for some herbs is "Plant after frost."   You'll see that on a lot of seed packets too.  Have no clue when that is?  I didn't either...but the internet is my friend!  You can find the first frost date for the Freeze / Frost Occurrence Data at the National Climatic Data Center.   It has the average last spring and first fall frost dates for most US cities.

But it's not exactly a simple chart to figure out.  The Spring section of the chart shows when the temperature is likely to fall to three different temperatures:  36 degrees Fahrenheit, 32 degrees and 28 degrees.   The 32 degree dates are the ones you should use for most crops.  The three columns in Spring show when the likelyhood of having frost at those temps are at 90%, 50%, and 10%...leaving you to decide how much risk you want to take.

You can read more on frost dates at Mother Earth News and read more about how levels of frost affect plants at The Old Farmer's Almanac.

Oh, by the way, the plant pictured at the top is some heirloom oak-leaf lettuce I planted this fall...I think in November.  They're only a couple inches high and I'm not sure if that's how they normally grow (being an odd variety) or if they are supposed to grow taller.

Well, as you can tell, I'm no gardening expert...just an amature trying to figure things out.  I find most of my info about when to plant in the book Month to Month Gardening in Texas, which I highly recommend, especially if you are new to Texas!

Gale Force Winds in California

A Californian friend just put a picture of knocked over tree up on facebook. That's how I found out there were Gale force winds hitting California (Would it be too cheesy to say me-force winds?  Um...yes, yes it would, Gale.).

Ok, now that I'm done having a little conversation with myself...wanted to let all of you in California know I'm thinking about you and hope you're staying safe.

Rivers Flowing Again

I hadn't yet blogged about the welcomed torrent of rain that we got the other night.  So many happy results of that...the yard is greener, the weather is cooler, and the little creek that runs a short walk away from our home is full again.  No fish or frogs yet, and the usually murky water was crystal clear.  The rest of this summer that stream has been dry...a path, not a river.

Dear Rain...

Another fun conversation with facebook friends:

TEXALINAN FRIEND (Texas friend who moved to North Carlina):
Dear rain; I am breaking up with you, please go away. I hear Texas is pretty desperate for you. Skedaddle over there where you might be more appreciated.

TEXAFORNIAN FRIEND:  I will take some of that rain!!!

TEXALINAN FRIEND:  See rain!? Texas wants you. Texas thinks you are hawt.

TEXAS FRIEND:  Thanks for letting the rain know! LOL!

ME:  Dear East Coast, I've heard rain is getting on your nerves...hanging around, loitering, ect. Please feel free to send him down here to us. I think rain needs to attend Texas bootcamp!

By the way, if you'ld like to hear more of Texalinan's wit and opinions, she has a blog you can check out!

Aloha Friday - Summer

Hello!  I'm participating in Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer and Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).

The entire summer here in Texas has been in the triple digits (just about).  If I were in charge of schools, summer for schools in Texas would be from the 2nd week of April through the first week of July (to include independence day). That would give us more time to enjoy the cool months, and still have a little summer overlap with other states.

So here's my questions...

  1. How's the weather been this summer where you are?
  2. If you could choose when summer vacation would be (any time...wouldn't even have to be 3 months in a row...could be a month here and there), would you change the dates of summer?

You can post your answers in a comment below.  :-)

Sky Watch Friday

More snow pictures!  No, we didn't get more snow...this is all from last week.  And I've already shared some of these in the collage I posted a couple days ago...but these deserved to be seen up close, and plus, they really show off the beautiful blue sky and fluffy cotton ball clouds that day!

Mosaic of a Snow Day

There's my kiddos playing in the snow!   (Yes, we had snow...in TEXAS...that was nice enough to build a snowman with.  Amazing!  That's like two years in a row!)

So, when I stumbled on a coupon code for a free Snapfish photo collage poster at Dallas Mommy I decided to send some snow pics to my dad.  Came out pretty cool!  (Though actually this is a slightly different version than I sent him.)

Snow Day!

We had snow today!   For some of you that's no big deal, but in Texas, a nice blanket of snow like this is a rare occassion!   My children got to stay home from school and had fun making snowmen and having snowball fights.  It was looking patchy by late afternoon, but there might even still be enough left for a few more snowballs to throw tomorrow.

In my hometown of Twin Peaks, California we'd have just about gotten sick of snow about now.  Come February we were about ready for Spring.     Speaking of the Mountains, during last sky watch I stumbled on a neat blog from California that has a bunch of pictures of Big Bear, which is right down the road from me.   I gather the snowstorm we got hasn't hit them so much.  If you visit make sure to scroll down to see these gorgous pictures of Big Bear Lake.

Aloha Friday/2 Question Thursday

Winter Dog Apparel petshirt
((Beach Snowman Gifts by RedRider08)

Week before last we had 80 degree weather here, and a friend of mine was complaining that it didn't feel like the right time of year with the weather being so warm.  I have to say, though, I like getting a little summer in the middle of Winter. There's so few times the weather is that nice here in Texas, I'll take it when I can get it!

Of course, Christmas is a little different. It's kinda nice to have it FEEL like Christmas. Snow is the best Christmas present, but it's a little unrealistic to hope for that two years in a row (places all over Texas had a white Christmas for the first time in a decade or so last year).  But a nice chill on Christmas is welcome!

So, here's a couple questions for you about winter weather  (and yeah, I realize these don't apply much to California and other warm weather states...unless you live in the mountains like I did) ...
  • Do you (or would you) enjoy an 80 degree break in the winter weather?
  • Would you be disappointed if it was warm on Christmas?
Thanks!  If you have a blog and would like to post your own questions you can leave your link on the appropriate day at the linkys at 2 Questions Thursday and Aloha Friday.

Sky Watch Friday - Competing Skies

The sky had so many personalities the other night...

To the east the sky was a frothy pink confection that
looked like it should have winged unicorns flying through it.

And to the west...

The sky like kindling ablaze against the black shadows of leaves and houses.

So much beauty!

I'll have my own to share next week.)
